The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a remarkable journey around Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), World's eighth-highest peak, blending natural beauty, cultural depth, and exhilarating adventure. Pristine landscapes, traditional Tibetan Buddhist villages, and spectacular mountain scenery make this off-the-beaten trek more appealing compared to those routes that get jammed during the peak seasons, such as the Annapurna Circuit. From subtropical lowland, it winds upward to icy heights to the Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters in altitude, a perfect, 15 days trek that showcases Nepal from its lush valleys all the way up to snow-capped peaks.

Manaslu Circuit Trek - Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the best trekking routes in Nepal, with its rewarding and immersive blend of breathtaking mountain scenery, cultural encounters, and constant change in the landscapes. This two-week-long trek encircles the Manaslu Conservation Area, a perfect showcase of the 8th highest peak in the world Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m) along with the neighboring ranges of Annapurna and Ganesh Himal. Known for its more Off-the-beaten-path, peaceful trails, the Manaslu Circuit is an ideal alternative to the crowded Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit treks. It's a journey that gives solitude and a feeling of adventure to travelers ready to venture into the most rugged and remote trails of Nepal.

After a few hours of scenic and adventurous drive to Soti Khola from Kathmandu. The trek begins from the lowland village of Machha Khola. This route follows the gauging Budhi Ghandiki River upwards, accompanied by beautiful terrace fields, dense forests, and glistening waterfalls along gorges lined with towering cliffs. Manaslu Circuit also offers a thrilling experience of passing the dramatic rivers with suspension bridges, adding a thrill factor to the trek. As you will be in the Manaslu and Annapurna Conservation area you might spot some endangered animals including snow leopard, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr.

The Trek passes through traditional villages, experiencing the culture of Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist traditions as you ascend higher. Due to the richness of the culture, tradition, and warm hospitality of the Himalayan people, many trekkers extend the trek up to 22 days by making exploration in the culturally unique Tsum Valley, where Tibetan traditions and spirituality still remain very much alive.

On the final stretch of the Manaslu circuit trek, you will achieve the highest elevation on this mesmerizing trek, Larkya La Pass at 5106 m. Renowned for its snow and icy paths, an early morning ascent to Larkya La to avoid the high winds. When you reach Larkya La Pass you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Manaslu (8,163 m), Cheo Himal (6,820 m), Himlung Himal (7,126 m), and Annapurna II (7,937 m), one of the most beautiful panoramic view of Himalayan giants. You then make a gradual descent from Lakya La through alpine meadows, shifting to subtropical forests as you approach Beshisahar.

At Touch Planet Treks, you can book a fully inclusive trek where accommodations offer comfort along the way. We are open to customized itineraries as per your requirements, keeping safety as the priority. This is just a really remote adventure that uncovers the heart of Nepal. Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging trek that requires a fair amount of fitness, endurance, and mental preparation for high-altitude treks. Speaking to our experienced guides who have completed this off-the-beaten-path trek of Manaslu Circuit multiple times, they said that it is strenuous because of the altitude, the rocky terrain, and the long hours on the trek. The highest point in this trek is Larkey La Pass at 5,106 meters above sea level. So, Altitude sickness is much more likely if you don't acclimatize properly. Acclimatization is the key element, and guides make sure that enough rest days are spent at important places. The Samagaun and Larkya La Phedi are good to acclimatize for your body rest.

The trail is steep up and down ascents, adding rocky uneven trails that demand stamina and endurance for anyone to successfully complete this trek. The trekkers will also encounter changes in weather conditions. With snow and icy conditions near the pass where the use of micro crampons might become necessary. This is not a trek for extremely beginner trekkers, this challenging Manaslu Circuit Trek is for those in good physical condition with prior trekking experience. The guides will share their knowledge and experience of the route for your safety. And success in quite an unforgettable off-the-beaten-path trek.

Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek

The best season for Manaslu Circuit Trek is Spring and Autumn season. During this time of this year, the weather is stable. The sky is clear, temperatures are pleasant, and the surrounding peaks and landscapes can be viewed at their best.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best seasons for Manaslu Circuit Trekking, as the trails are colorful with a bloom of rhododendrons and other wildflowers. This season offers a colorful backdrop to the trek. The temperature is considerably warmer than during springtime, especially at the lower altitude levels. Thus, this is a comfortable time for trekking. It is also the best time to visit some of the areas at high altitude, as the Larkya La Pass is accessible and presents surreal mountain scenery along with crystal clear views.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another ideal season to trek to Manaslu Circuit, which has clear, clear-blue skies and fresh, cool air after the monsoon season. The temperatures are moderate. Hence, steep ascents and descents are easier to negotiate. Besides that, autumn has festivals like Dashain and Tihar, which adds a cultural feeling while trekking.

These two seasons are the ideal time for Manaslu Circuit Trek, but other months can be done, keeping certain limitations in mind. In winter, from December to February, the cold is intense and the snows heavly with the height it gains. Thereby making the trek harder in winter. During the monsoon, from June to August, it rains, which makes the trails slippery, causing landslides and obstruction of views.

How to train for Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The preparation for the Manaslu Circuit Trek is essential for handling the challenges that we will be facing in the circuit. We need to be prepared to deal with challenging terrains, high altitudes, and multi-day trekking. Cardiovascular conditioning is your most important form of training because the trek entails long rigorous days over terrains and steep inclines. This training includes jogging, cycling, and stair climbing at least three times per week. It is recommended that, for stamina endurance, the exercise intensity and time should be stepped up gradually. Walking on terrains with elevation differences is also essential. You should try to spend at least 3-5 hours a day to simulate trekking conditions. And also prepare the musculoskeletal system for climbing and descending. This approach will allow the building of energies required in order to fully appreciate the trek and contend with the landscape.

Strength training is also important as it will help you to trek for several hours with your equipment. Calisthenic lower body movements like squats, lunges, and step-up movements are used in the development of leg curls to support the body in uphill and downward walking. These include plain or press-up, back extension as well as crunching exercises for stability when dealing with rough terrains. Furthermore, upper body strength training is beneficial. This is because carrying a loaded backpack may cause some damage to your arms and shoulders without doing some strength exercises. Slowly increasing the weight of the backpack will make it easier to carry during the treks. Besides helping to get used to the terrain with the backpack.

Last but not least one should need to be flexible and mentally set for the trek. The tough conditions of the Manaslu Circuit Trek will only determine how enjoyable the trek is. To increase flexibility and avoid strains and injury on the trail, stretch your muscles and tendons in and around the legs hips, and back areas on a routine basis. Emotional strength is also important because high-altitude trekking is stressful on body and mind. You should always be looking for things that bring some healthy mental relaxation. Such as meditation, breathing, or visualization during the stressful part of the Manaslu Circuit trekking. If you have your training done consistently for about 2-3 months then you will be ready to accept the challenges that are thrown at you in the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

The main highlight of the trek is Larke La Pass at 5,106 meters. Which provides spectacular views of the high snowcapped peaks including Manaslu, Himlung, and Cheo. Moves to Besisahar where it connects with the Annapurna Circuit at Dharapani.

What makes Manaslu Circuit spectacular is that it is less explored and it's off the beaten paths. The trail goes through villages of Gurung and migrated Tibetans whereby trekkers can have firsthand encounters with highland culture and treasures, monasteries with proven Buddhist influence in the area. Unlike the more popular treks, the Manaslu Circuit has a relatively low number of visitors and hence is quieter. Every day produces a new topography ranging from forests and rivers, alpine pastures and glaciers to ancient cultures and heritages which makes this trekking adventurous and cultural equally.

Altitude Sickness and Remedies on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

One of the major challenges that trekkers have to deal with in high altitude treks like Manaslu Circuit is altitude sickness, especially when making your way up to Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m. The best thing you can do is gradually ascend and add 1 day for acclimatization in Samagaun, especially above 3,000 meters above sea level. It is a good idea to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine since these can act to your disadvantage dehydrate you and create problems in your acclimatization.

Many trekkers take Diamox, which is a medicine that can prevent symptoms. It is best to take it upon consultation with a doctor before embarking on your journey. During the trek, if you have any symptoms, the safest options include going down to a lower altitude until you feel well. With a little caution, your health can stay upright to behold the spectacle that awaits in the Manaslu Circuit.

Manaslu Circuit Accommodations

During your adventurous Manaslu Circuit trekking, you will be staying in multiple types of accommodations. So, it is useful to bring a portable charger to help keep devices powered. Not only do such teahouses serve as cozy ways to rest, but they are also a great way to support the locals and experience firsthand the famous hospitality of the Himalayas.

Meal on the Manaslu Circuit Trek

The meals on the Manaslu Circuit Trek are truly filling, with all the calories one could wish to have in a day on the long trail. Dal Bhat, one of the Nepali staples made of rice, lentil soup, and vegetables served at most teahouses, is a favorite among trekkers. Because of its high-calorie content and all-you-can-eat refills. However, the options for food include Tibetan bread, noodles, momos or dumplings, eggs, and potatoes. The menu becomes more limited in the stops like Larkya La Phedi and the prices rise as you go higher, as all supplies need to be carried upwards into remote areas.

For energy boosts during the day, many trekkers bring along extra snacks such as energy bars, nuts, or chocolate. A part of teahouse dining is nourishment for the continuity of the journey, while at the same time, it's a test of the local flavors that make the meals enjoyable.
