Best Season for Ruby Valley Trek,Time, and Months

The best time to trek in Ruby Valley is during the spring, between March and April, and autumn season, between September and October. These months offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and breathtaking views of the central Himalayan ranges. So, from mid-March, temperatures rise and give way to a perfect temperature for trekking. A perfect time to witness the beauty of rhododendron flowers in full bloom. However, the autumn season, mainly from mid-September until the end of October, is also recommended because the monsoon retreats and skies are clear with a perfect trekking climate. In these months, the temperatures vary from 20°C during the day to 5°C at night. Hence, the trek can be very enjoyable with outstanding views of the mountains and festivals of Nepal.

Although the Ruby Valley Trek can be done throughout the year, the other seasons have some difficulties. May and June are considered good months for trekking in Ruby Valley since they are just before the monsoon rains start. However, from July up to mid-August, rain is at its highest, resulting in wet and slippery trails that can be dangerous, especially on ridges and descents. The cold temperature and snowfall prevail from November to February, with the higher region getting a harder trek. November has fairly stable weather, with some sunny days, but gets colder as winter advances in Nepal. Ruby Valley is one of the most popular treks despite these challenges due to its proximity to Kathmandu and flexibility throughout the year.

Ruby Valley Trek Distance

The Ruby Valley Trek takes nearly about 10 days altogether, with a distance covered of approximately 70 to 80 km. The trail proved to be diverse and lively with magnificent sights to cherish. First, there is a road trip of about 150 km, 7 to 8 hours from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The first day of the trek is between 10 to 12 km from Syabrubesi to Gatlang and it will take 5 to 6 hours in total.

The next day involves about 15 to 16 km trek from Gatlang to Somdang passing Parvati Kund which is considered sacred by villagers taking about 6 to 7 hours. Continuing from Somdang, the trek stretches toward Tipling, a distance of 12 to 14 km in 7 to 8 hours, including the crossing of the Pangsang Pass at 3,842 meters.

Then, you trek from Tipling to Chalish Gaun covering 7 to 8 km. It takes about 4 to 5 hours. The next day, from Chalish Gaun, you will trek up to Darkha Gaun, approximately 10 to 12 km, which may take up to 5 to 6 hours. Finally, on the last day of the trek, you will drive back from Darkha Gaun to Kathmandu, covering about 120 km, taking up to 7 to 8 hours.

Essential Information

Ruby Valley Trek Difficulty Level

The Rudy Valley Trek in Nepal is graded as a moderately difficult trekking route that requires a reasonably fit and experienced trekker. The maximum altitude reached on the trek is at Pangsang La Pass, which is about 3,842 meters. However, it is not considered a high-altitude trek in the context of trekking in Nepal. The same precautions for altitude sickness have to be taken and sufficient acclimatization allowed against altitude sickness.

The trek is along all types of terrains, starting from dense forests to terraced farmland and finally the rocky paths. Steep ascent and descent along with the uneven surfaces make the trek physically demanding and call for a good level of stamina. You will be covering around 70 to 80 Km of distance during the Ruby Valley trek which means 10 to 17 km per day.

The most particularly unforeseeable thing is the weather during the monsoon season, which generally ranges between June and August. Thus, trekkers should prefer to go in spring from March to May or autumn from September to November of the year, when the conditions are most stable. The Ruby Valley Trek is also less developed than some of Nepal's more famous trails, with limited facilities along the route. This also means fewer teahouses and lodges, and trekkers might need to carry extra supplies and camp at certain points(optional). But trekkers traveling with us don't have to worry about anything related to food, accommodation, and other amenities. We will have pre-booked accommodation before your Ruby Valley Trek begins.

Ruby Valley Trek Permits

Meanwhile, for Trekking to Rubby Valley, there are two official permits that trekkers must obtain. First, the Langtang National Park entrance fee is required to obtain it. The track goes through this protected territory with unique fauna and picturesque views and it costs NPR 3,000 (Approx. USD 25) per person. The second permit is the TIMS Card which means Trekkers’ Information Management System and it costs NPR 2,000 (Approx. USD 16) per person. So, all trekkers must carry one in Nepal, and authorities use them to monitor trekkers’ movements to ensure their safety. Hence, each of these permits protects the lives of trekkers, aids in the conservation of the Langtang area, and enhances the general experience of the treks.

Ruby Valley Trek Travel Insurance

Indeed, preparing for the Ruby Valley Trek requires special attention to your safety, ensuring that you are suitably covered with travel insurance. Similar to other high-altitude treks, some risks involved in the Ruby Valley trek include high-altitude sickness. Comprehensive travel insurance is necessary for all trekkers, mitigating such risks as much as possible.

Your insurance policy for Ruby Valley Trek must cover the following at a minimum Medical emergencies, and Emergency repatriation. The policy should include helicopter rescue and evacuation expenses up to 4000 meters. A good quality insurance policy ensures that you get a wellspring and effective medical service during any unforeseen situations and also can get evacuated on time and effectively.

Touch Planet Treks does not sell any policies, we recommend good and trusted insurance based on our previous clients' experiences. Once you have booked your trek, please kindly send your insurance details to us, such as your policy number and the details of what is covered. This is so we can be prepared in case of an emergency and swiftly organize a rescue operation if it is needed. Please ensure that your policy specifically covers you for mountain rescue costs, especially at high altitudes.

Physical Fitness and Preparation for Ruby Valley Trekking

It is very important that you prepare physically and build strength before going on any adventure activities such as the Ruby Valley trek. Although this trek is not as difficult as the Manaslu Circuit and Everest Base Camp Trek but mountains will obviously challenge you. You will be trekking at least 5 to 6 hours daily through the lush forests, some with steep descents and ascend, and some rocky terrains too.

You should aim to develop your cardiovascular fitness by exercising through activities such as walking, jogging, or cycling. To be able to cope with the moderate daily duration of trekking build some strength in your legs. The leg and stability exercises such as squats, lunges, and step-ups are perfect to build up the lower limb muscles. General stretching and exercises that enhance flexibility, as well as stamina, will also be helpful while trekking up and down in steep and rugged terrains.

Transportation Modes in Ruby Valley Trek

Transportation modes in the Ruby Valley Trek are designed for convenience and adventure. There will be traveling in Private Cars, Vans, Comfortable Bus, Private Jeeps, and Local Bus in some cases. Meanwhile, the journey starts with airport pick-up by a convenient private car or van. Depending upon a number of trekkers we will drive between public buses for a budget-friendly experience. However, if the trekkers are in groups we will travel in private jeeps for added comfort and flexibility. The drive to Syaprubesi offers scenic views of terraced fields, lush hills, and rural villages. Syaprubesi is a major trailhead that also serves as the gateway to other Langtang region treks, hence a popular starting point among trekking enthusiasts.

Accommodation on the Ruby Valley Trek

Accommodations during the Ruby Valley Trek are pretty basic but friendly teahouses and comfortable lodges, allowing interaction with the local culture. Comfortable rooms of sharing with twin beds and blankets, along with shared bathroom facilities, are standard at teahouses, offering warmth and comfort after a full day of trekking. Warm teahouses are available in villages such as Chalish, Tipling, and Somdang, where one is allowed to share accommodations with local families and other trekkers, enjoy local food, and warm up with their hospitality. Although the facilities are modest and the region is pretty remote, the hosts are friendly. This makes it a memorable experience. Some accommodations have dining areas with fireplaces, but bringing a sleeping bag is essential for extra warmth in colder months.

Food on Ruby Valley Trek

During the Ruby Valley Trek, you’ll enjoy a mix of local flavors and simple, hearty meals. The menu often includes Nepali staples like dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), noodles, soups, and fresh seasonal produce. For a taste of local culture, dishes like Dhido or Gundruk are must-tries. Meals are freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients, providing nourishment for your trek. While dietary preferences are accommodated to the fullest, options are limited by the remoteness of the setting. Quick snacks such as tea, Tibetan bread, and biscuits are also available, so you will never feel low on energy throughout your journey.

Drinking Water During Ruby Valley Trekking

On the Ruby Valley Trek, it's key to drink plenty of water. Thus, clean water is available easily at teahouses or lodges. It's even possible to fill your bottle from natural springs or streams, but remember to use water purification tablets or filters. Another way to safely consume water is to boil it. A strong, reusable water bottle is necessary for carrying water and reducing plastic waste. Adequate hydration combats fatigue and reduces the risk of altitude sickness, so make drinking water a priority on your trek.

Ruby Valley Trekking Wi-Fi and Connectivity

Wi-Fi connectivity during the Ruby Valley Trek will be available but it may be unreliable. Wi-Fi is available in a few teahouses in larger villages, such as Chalish Gaun or Somdang, for a small charge. However, it may be slow. It is best if trekkers inform family and friends in advance that for some time, communication may be patchy. Local SIM cards with cellular data may provide intermittent coverage, though it's not guaranteed. The trek offers a unique opportunity to become disconnected from the digital world and into the natural beauty and culture that the Ruby Valley has in store for them.

Electricity and Charging in Ruby Valley Trek

The electricity on the Ruby Valley Trek is available most of the time, but at times, teahouses and lodges depend on solar panels for electricity. Some of them offer charging facilities, for which they usually charge trekkers with a small amount. It is highly recommended to bring a power bank along to keep phones and cameras functional throughout the trek. Solar chargers also offer an environmentally friendly solution for powering electronic devices. Conserve your energy by switching off non-essential features or using them sparingly. In this way, the limited access to electricity is part of the trek's rustic charm, encouraging trekkers to concentrate on nature and the cultural experience.
