Overview of Panch Pokhari Trek

Panch Pokhari is a beautiful, holy place in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal, which offers the rare combination of pristine Himalayan adventure and spiritual significance. Special in Janai Purnima: during the summer, in the month of July or August, there will be a sacred festival. The sacred lake Panch Pokhari has a belief that God Mahadev stayed and harvested the paddy near the Panch Pokhari lake. Once upon a time, around 2,325 years ago, one of the renowned hunters from the Bhotang village named Bumba Ruwa Waiba went to hunt. Suddenly he saw someone cultivating paddy near the giant Panch Pokhari lake; he tried to meet them, but these people disappeared from the farm. So, Mr. Bumba Ruwa Waiba believes that there is a god, which is the goddess Mahadev, and Dev Garn (divine forces) disappear because of human activities.

Then the hunter, Mr.Bumba Ruwa Waiba, removed his hunter dog’s bell and kept it in the plane, where he found farming the paddy by God Shiva and built a small temple. Later, he built a Shiva Mahadev temple, which is known as a Hindu and Buddhist temple. You can find the prayer flags at the sacred Buddhist pilgrimage spot. Moreover, there will be 5 giant sacred lakes, which are called Panch Pokhari. There will be a viewpoint at about 4,300 meters; you will have amazing panoramic views of Panch Pokhari and the surrounding peaks. Trekkers will be exploring the beautiful Jugal Himal and Dorje Lakpa ranges from the Panch Pokhari. The sacred alpine ponds are set at 4,115 meters and are revered in Hindu and Buddhist tradition. From the high-altitude lakes, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of the beautiful Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa Himal, the Langtang mountain range and Helambu.

Moreover, trekkers will be exploring stunning varieties of rhododendron forest, alpine meadows, and wildlife, including the Himalayan Thar, Pheasant and varieties of birds. From these high-altitude waters, trekkers are rewarded with sweeping views of Jugal Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and the Langtang mountain range. Along the way, the trail reveals a stunning variety of rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and wildlife, including Himalayan tahr and beautiful pheasants. Unlike the Everest and Annapurna routes, the Panch Pokhari remains an off-the-beaten-path trek, with Himalayan adventure, where there will be fewer crowds and authentic encounters with Tamang, Sherpa, and Brahmin villages. Trekkers will have an untouched, meditative, and deeper peaceful environment.

You will drive to Chhamti from Kathmandu, which will be around 90 kilometers. Trekkers can do teahouse trekking; each camp has a comfortable teahouse during the trek. The teahouse trekking will be cost-effective, easy, and well-organized. Whereas camping treks will be costly and difficult, you will have beautiful nature exploration, and trekkers can stay in the middle of alpine grassland or meadows, beside the lush forest, where you can feel the authentic nature. Hence, trekkers can have solo and group trekking options. If you are a solo trekker, you need to carry all trekking gear, including the Panch Pokhari trek map and itinerary. The solo trek might be challenging, but it will be freedom to travel and explore the authentic nature.

The group trek in Panch Pokhari will be in a group with the trek guide and porters, so it will be a wonderful adventure. The guide will lead the expedition and organize the trip well. Thus, the Panch Pokhari trek is best for teahouse trekking and on a group trip. A teahouse trek in a group will be cost-effective, much safer, and personalized.

Spiritual and Cultural Experiences of Panch Pokhari Trek

The Panch Pokhari trek is a beautiful trekking route, where you can find unique cultural experiences and spiritual beliefs. In Janai Purnima, which will fall in July or August, there will be a festival; many pilgrims will go there, and they will be celebrating the Janai Purnima festival. During another season, a pilgrimage will also be held; there is a belief that God Mahadev is believed to have taken place in Panch Pokhari. A long time back, before 2,325 years, one of the hunters spotted the god Mahadev and his entire group. The hunter Bumba Ruwa Waiba, who spotted Lord Shiva farming the paddy in Panch Pokhari, suddenly Lord Shiva saw Mr. Waiba; then lord shiva and his Dev Sena disappeared from Panch Pokhari. Hence, now there is a belief that if you find paddy crops and ducks in the Panch Pokhari, you will be lucky and have a chance to become wealthy.

However, Janai Purnima pilgrimage traditions, ritual bathing, the goddess Shiva Skanda, and a dip in the holy water will give you peace and better health. Worshipping in the Mahadev temple for Mahadev or Shiva will protect you from diseases and also help you to find a better life partner. In Panch Pokhari there are 5 lakes; likewise, Bhairab Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, Surya Kunda, Naag Kunda, and Dudh Kunda are mentioned in the popular Hindu scriptural Skanda Purana.
